Founders Day presentation - "Dixon's Darkest Day"

Please join Dixon Main Street and the Lee County Historical and Genealogical Society in celebrating Dixon's rich history!

Dinner will be available for purchase beginning at 6 pm
Awards and program will begin at 6:45 pm

This year's presentation will be "Dixon's Darkest Day".

On Sunday, May 4, 1873, a large crowd gathered on Dixon’s new bridge to watch Baptist Pastor J.H. Pratt perform several baptisms in the Rock River below. But the bridge suddenly buckled and collapsed, hurling scores of men, women, and children into the river. On that tragic day, 44 people died, the worst calamity ever to strike Dixon.

Tom Wadsworth of Dixon, a professional speaker whose great-great-great grandmother drowned on that day, will give a 45-minute pictorial presentation of the disaster, how it happened, and the many lives that were lost on Dixon’s Darkest Day.

Will be held at the Northwest Territory Historic Center, 205 W 5th St, Dixon, on Tuesday, April 11 at 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
